Forbes was finishing his cheese roll having informed the station of their delay.

Sanders got into the front seat, rammed the key into the ignition, and glanced back at the house, before aggressively pulling away.

‘Are you okay, Lewis?’

‘No, I ain’t. Harley’s had a fight at school yesterday and buggered off. No one has seen her since. A PC paid the grandmother a visit over it, and no one told us. I felt like a right bellend. And that Hudson. Jesus, he is a big lad, and I reckon he will be a handful by the time he’s a man. He flatly refused to help and made no bones about it.’

‘Like his father, Luke, then?’

‘No, Jacob, something much more fucking sinister. I don’t know what it is about those kids, but I swear, he just put the wind up me. I dunno, maybe I’m just too old for the job.’

Forbes laughed. ‘No, you are not too old. He genuinely is an extraordinary kid. And this case is getting more complicated as the hours flit past. I want to know where the hell Harley is.’

‘You and me both. Let’s get back to the station and see what they have for us. Someone in the team might have found something, if any of them have managed to pull their fingers out of their arses.’

Forbes didn’t say another word. He knew Sanders was in a foul mood because he was beginning to think that Harley could be the culprit after forming some strange attachment to the child.
